Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers before a serious conversation.

Key questions about foreign investment, manufacturing, industrial locations, renewable energy and VARELAN’s role in Bangladesh.

Before you begin

Investor questions, answered at the right level.

Public guidance should help management understand the landscape without pretending that project-specific legal, tax or investment advice can be generalized.

The answers below are intentionally practical and risk-aware. Where a question depends on current regulation, sector rules, tax treatment, legal rights or technical standards, the matter should be confirmed against current official guidance and with appropriately qualified advisers.

For company-specific questions, the best next step is a private discussion framed around the actual investment or project.

FAQ

What prospective investors ask.

VARELAN operates two distinct platforms. VARELAN Advisory provides client-side FDI, market-entry, manufacturing, energy and infrastructure advisory. Separately, VARELAN’s renewable-energy development platform may originate, develop, structure, sponsor, co-develop or economically participate in selected projects.

No. Bangladesh should be evaluated against the investor’s product, market, operating model, economics, risk tolerance and alternative locations. A credible evaluation can conclude that Bangladesh is relevant—or that another market is a better fit.

Ownership rules depend on activity and applicable law. BEPZA expressly identifies Type A enterprises in its EPZs as 100% foreign owned. Outside that context, ownership and sector-specific requirements should be confirmed for the proposed business with the current investment authority and qualified legal advisers.

Invest Bangladesh was established in August 2026 under the Invest Bangladesh Act, merging the former Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority and Public Private Partnership Authority into a new apex investment-promotion agency.

EPZs operated by BEPZA are established environments oriented toward export manufacturing. Economic-zone pathways can serve different project profiles and are now part of the institutional landscape overseen through Invest Bangladesh. The right choice depends on export profile, utilities, customs, location, facility and project requirements.

We look beyond headline rent or wages. The decision should consider labor and productivity, utilities, suppliers, port and road access, customs, building or land configuration, expansion, compliance, customer lead times and establishment schedule.

VARELAN does not present itself as a substitute for appropriately licensed or qualified legal, tax, audit, engineering, environmental or other specialist advisers. Where those inputs are required, they should be provided by suitable professionals and coordinated into the broader investment process.

VARELAN can help define the commercial rationale, partner profile and evaluation questions around a potential relationship. Governance, transaction documents, tax, legal rights and other regulated matters require qualified specialist advice.

There are two possible roles. On the advisory side, VARELAN can support an investor evaluating the Bangladesh energy market or a project. Separately, the development platform may directly participate in selected renewable-energy opportunities as developer, sponsor, co-developer or economic participant.

The applicable role should be made clear to the relevant party. VARELAN does not present a principal-side economic interest as independent client advice. Mandate boundaries and participation should be defined before substantive work proceeds.

The website does not offer or promise financing. Project finance, lender engagement and capital structuring may involve appropriately qualified financial, legal and banking counterparties depending on the mandate and project stage.

The platform is designed for foreign investors, manufacturers, multinationals, private businesses, private equity, family offices, infrastructure funds, institutional investors, developers, IPPs, EPC companies and strategic partners evaluating meaningful capital or operating decisions.

There is no responsible universal timeline. Timing depends on business activity, entity and regulatory requirements, site or facility needs, utilities, permits, staffing, imports, specialist workstreams and management readiness. A project-specific implementation plan is more useful than a generic estimate.

Useful context includes company and role, industry, strategic objective, project category, current stage, countries being compared, approximate scale where appropriate, target timeline and the principal uncertainties management wants to resolve.

The website is designed to begin with limited decision-relevant context. Sensitive commercial, project, partner and investment information should be shared only through agreed channels and under appropriate confidentiality arrangements where required.

Begin with a confidential conversation. VARELAN will seek to understand the decision, determine whether the platform is relevant, clarify whether the role is advisory or principal-side development, and then discuss an appropriate next step if there is a fit.

Bangladesh Bank states that cash dividends, net of tax, may be remitted to non-resident shareholders through authorized dealer banks without prior Bangladesh Bank approval. Tax, documentation and banking requirements still apply, and investors should verify the current process for their structure.
